Taxi Charges Increased: It was announced

in the Hongkong News

of July 20th that due to the high cost of oil fuel and gasolene the charges for taxis and lorries were to be increased from July 22nd. Now charges for taxis were to be as follows: Hongkong between two districts 7.00, between three districts ¥10, between four districts ¥14.00, within the same district ¥4.00, and outside the city limit, ¥35.00 for a two-hour period. Lorries within the

city limits were to charge ¥20.00 for each hour or part the re of and cutside the city ¥35.00 per hour. Detention was to be at the rate of 1.00 for every 30 minutes.

12. Bus Routes Shortened: In order to conserve fuel the Hongkong

Motor Bus Company announced on July 26th that its No.1 route (Hongkong - Motohonkon) would be shortened. The terminus would be moved from the Post Office to Pokfulam Road near the Hongkong University. (Hongkong News July 26th).

The Hongkong News announced on July 29th that permits must be secured before passengers could leave for Shanghai or Swatow. Passengers were only allowed to carry three pieces of hand luggage, which would be taken charge of by the Tourist Bureau. Fares were as follows: To Shanghai, 1st class ¥160.00, 2nd class ¥105.00, 3rd class ¥47.00, 4th class 24.00. To Swatow, 1st class 140.00, 2nd cless ¥27.00, 3rd class ¥12.00, and 4th class ¥7.00.

15, Medical Precautions for Cholera Prevention:

It was announced on

July 17th that passengers from Hongkong to Canton would have to undergo a 24-hour quarantine on arrival in Canton. Passengers were advised to bring their own food for consumption during this period. (Hongkong News July 17th). Comment: Special rates for fooding passengers during this period were subsequently announced by shipping companies.
